The elves and the Shoemaker is a very popular kids’ story for Christmas. I will tell you a small summary of the story before we get started with the popsicle stick puppets.
I won’t go into too much detail about the story because I’ve heard and read so many different versions of it. But the most common understanding of the story goes like this.
Once upon a time, there lived a shoemaker and his wife. The Shoemaker made shoes out of leather to earn his living. The Shoemaker was very poor. One day he ran out of money to buy new leather. He had only one piece of leather left. So the Shoemaker decided to make one last pair of shoes and sell it in the shoe market. He worked all day to make the shoe. It was already really late at night and he still hadn’t finished making the shoes.
The Shoemaker thought he might take a break and finish making the shoe the next morning. When the Shoemaker returned to his workshop the next morning he was more surprised than ever. There was a nice pair of shoes sitting on the table. He was shocked. The Shoemaker immediately knew what to do. He took the pair of shoes to the shoe market and sold them at a good price. Later that night the Shoemaker told his wife about the whole incident, and she was also amazed. So the next day the Shoemaker cut some leather and left them in the workshop.
The next morning, he was surprised to see the same result. This went on for weeks, every day the Shoemaker discovered beautiful pairs of shoes and sandals. The Shoemaker earned lots of money, and he had enough to build a good home and buy good food. One day the Shoemaker and his wife wanted to see who is secretly helping them and wanted to thank them.
So they stayed hidden in the workshop at night, and what they saw surprised them even more. Two little happy dancing elves entered the workshop and they made beautiful pairs of shoes and left the workshop. The Shoemaker and his wife wanted to show gratitude towards the elves, so they made the elves new clothes and shoes and left them in the workshop, since it was Christmas eve they also decorated the workshop. The two elves were really happy to see the gifts and happily put them on.
