Here are some fun facts about jellyfish that you can share with kids:
Jellyfish are not fish: They are invertebrates, which means they don’t have a backbone.
Jellyfish have been around for a long time: Jellyfish are some of the oldest creatures on Earth, with a fossil record dating back over 500 million years.
Jellyfish are made mostly of water: Up to 95% of a jellyfish’s body is made up of water so I think water-fish would’ve been a more suitable name.
Jellyfish don’t have brains: They do have a simple nervous system that allows them to sense their surroundings and respond to stimuli.
Jellyfish can clone themselves: Some species of jellyfish can clone themselves by replicating their cells. This allows them to reproduce rapidly and colonize new areas.
Some jellyfish are bioluminescent: Certain species of jellyfish can emit light from their bodies, creating a stunning display of colors in the water.
Jellyfish stings can be painful: While not all jellyfish are dangerous to humans, some species can deliver a painful sting that can cause skin irritation, muscle cramps, and other symptoms.
Jellyfish eat in a unique way: Jellyfish don’t have mouths, but they do have tentacles that they use to catch prey. Once the prey is captured, the jellyfish’s tentacles transport it to its mouth, which is located underneath its body.
Jellyfish are an important part of the ocean ecosystem: Despite their reputation as nuisance creatures, jellyfish play an important role in the ocean ecosystem by providing food for other marine animals and helping to regulate the population of certain species.
